What is Dosha?

Ayurveda holds that a person’s dosha—a balance of the five elements of the universe known as air, earth, space, water, and fire—determines their level of health.
An Ayurvedic Physician can identify a person’s dosha using physical, emotional, mental, and behavioral traits based on years of Ayurvedic practice.
The Ayurvedic concept of doshas explains how unhealthy habits, poor diet, excessive work, and other factors may lead to comparative deficiencies or excesses, which cause them to become unbalanced about the natural constitution (Prakriti), leading to a current condition (Vikriti) that may eventually result in illness.
This individual’s natural composition serves as the healthy standard for a health condition. A person’s mind-body type, encompassing numerous physiological and psychological traits including physical appearance, physique, and personality, is related to the specific ratio of the doshas in their inherent constitution.
VATA
The Vata dosha is recognized as the energy of movement that controls all biological processes in the body and is generated from the components of space and air.
People with the Vata dosha are frequently energetic, creative, and endowed with a native capacity for expression and communication. When in balance, they have a bright attitude, are fast learners, and are enthusiastic and joyful.
However, when their Vata is imbalanced, individuals begin exhibiting
- Impulsive behavior patterns
- Mood swings
- Fear
- Anxiety
- Concern response to stress.
PITTA
Fire energy is where Pitta Dosha comes from. It is the bodily energy that drives metabolism and digestion.
It works by using carriers like organic acids, hormones, enzymes, and bile.
Pitta is primarily found in:
- Small intestines
- Stomach
- Liver
- Spleen
- Pancreas
- Blood
- Eyes
It is well recognized to give the body heat and energy by breaking down intricate food molecules, and it controls all mental and physical processes that involve conversion and transformation.
KAPHA
Water energy is the source of Kapha Dosha. It is the energy of construction and lubrication that gives the body physical form, structure, and the smooth operation of all its parts.
Kapha is primarily found in:
- Chest
- Throat
- Lungs
- Head
- Fatty tissues
- Connective tissues
- Ligaments
- Tendons
It helps lubricate the joints, stores energy and provides the volume of the tissue.
